And now, in an interview for Sky Sports, the 50-year-old, who has accepted an invitation to train with McGregor, has opened up on what it would mean to bag the role.

He said: “It is one of the great stories to tell, and probably one of the great roles to play.

“He started from nothing and really willed himself to power and achieved things that few have even attempted.

“He is an incredible character, a colourful character, I think it would make a great film to be honest.

“I would love to see the movie even if I wasn’t a part of it.

“It’s one for the ages, and it’s all because of him, just fascinating.”

Leto already revealed his desire to play McGregor on-screen last week.

And following the news McGregor personally invited him to join him in training as he tweeted: “Jared Leto, I invite you to come and practice the part with me!”

Leto though would have to pile on a significant amount of muscle in order to portray a stocky McGregor on the screen.

After packing on the muscle in training McGregor revealed his days competing at lightweight could be a thing of the past.

McGregor is expected to return to UFC action this autumn as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following his horrific leg break last July.

UFC president Dana White plans to meet the UFC’s poster boy in the coming weeks to discuss his recovery and a date for his blockbuster return to the octagon.

And welterweight champion and UFC pound-for-pound No1 Kamaru Usman is the man he wants to fight next.
